Our family holiday this year was to the resort of Puerto Pollensa, a small town situated in the Bay of Pollensa in the North of Majorca. The resort is traditional and slightly less commercialised compared to some of it neighbours. We stayed in a self-catering apartment near the centre which is a short stroll to a selection of restaurants to suit everyone’s tastes.

The central square is a bustling area surrounded by restaurants, shops and bars. There is a weekly market held on Wednesdays when it is filled with traders selling fruit, fish and crafts making it a lovely place to wander around. Many of the hotels offer a free shuttle bus to the large sandy beach on the south of the resort.

Beach We hired a car for a few days & drove to Port De Soller; a former fishing port with a sandy beach and a selection of restaurants, popular with families and couples. We took the ancient tram that runs to Soller and picked up the train to Palma for a spot of sightseeing. The famous Terrocarro de Soller railway travels through the Sierra De Alfabia mountain range and is meticulously finished and maintained using traditional methods. The journey is a must for any stay in Majorca as the scenery is beautiful throughout the hour-long journey offering wonderful photo opportunities. Soller sits between the mountains and the sea and is surrounded by orange groves. The main square, dominated by the Church of Sant Bartomeu, is the focal point of the town with plenty of restaurants, tapas bars and cafes to relax in.

We also visited the traditional historic towns of Valldemossa and Deia, some of the prettiest on the Island. They are situated in the Sierra de Tramlintano mountains, making them popular areas for hiking and cycling. Valldemossa has many gorgeous boutiques, art, craft and jewellery shops to explore throughout the cobbled streets. It is popular with day trippers, but if you wish to stay longer there are a selection of small boutique style hotels and villas.

Richard Branson once described Deia as ‘one of the most beautiful villages in the world’, and is often known to be an inspiration for artists, writers and musicians and I can understand why, sitting between the mountains and the sea makes the scenery breath-taking, there are fabulous restaurants and some wonderful accommodations to choose from plus a great place for celeb spotting as many own homes nearby!

Majorca exceeded my expectations, there is so much more to this beautiful island than the bright lights of Magaluf, we had a wonderful holiday and we will definitely return to explore even more.

After careful consideration we decided to take our two children aged 6 and 9 to the Fjords for a week in May on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas. Firstly, we sailed from Southampton and the embarkation was seamless.
