Sorrento is a popular Italian holiday destination with many people going for a week-long duration, but we found it a great place for a short break.

We chose a 4 night stay at the Hotel La Vue D’Or which due to its elevated position enjoys wonderful panoramic views overlooking the Bay of Naples. The hotel also has a lovely swimming pool to relax in. The hotel is situated just outside of Sorrento and they offer a frequent shuttle bus service to the centre.

On our first day we had booked a tour of the Amalfi Coast. Our first stop was Positano; a pretty town built into the steep cliff face on many different levels. We walked through the maze of wonderful windy streets down to the sea front. Looking back up at the steep town with an array of coloured buildings clinging to the cliff was a beautiful sight. In Amalfi Town we took a boat trip out onto the harbour and looked back at some of the beautiful homes built into the coastline – mostly owned by the rich and famous! The medieval town of Ravello was our final stop, here we had some free time to wander around and visit the picturesque Cathedral.

In the evening we took the shuttle bus from the hotel to Sorrento, here there are plenty of excellent restaurants to choose from and after your meal most places will bring you a complimentary shot of Limoncello – a famous export from the area.

The next day we caught the ferry over to Capri, there are several sailings a day and tickets are easily purchased. Capri is full of up scale hotels and designer shops as well as spectacular landscapes. Here we took a boat out to the Blue Grotto and got close to some of the huge yachts moored there. After the boat trip we got away from the crowds and followed a coastal path walk which was lovely before returning to Sorrento.

SorrentoThe next day we took the train to Pompeii, again this was very easy to do as the train goes straight into the site. The queues for tickets can be quite long so I would recommend pre-booking. Pompeii is a vast, archaeological site and a full day can be taken to explore. I was amazed and just how incredibly well-preserved Pompeii is and would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Sorrento is the perfect place to combine the relaxation of a beach holiday with all the action of a city break. It was a thoroughly enjoyable few days and I would confidently recommend.
